Skype for SIP lets workers make callss using their regular office phones insteadf of having to plug a headsegt intoa computer. SIP is the acronym for SessionmInitiation Protocol, a voice over Internet protocol used on many businesx telephony networks. The charge for callsd made to cell phones and landlinesx willbe 2.1 cents per minute, but there will be no chargr for calls made from computers to other Skypr networks. The beta version is availablew today and the product will be fully launchedr laterthis year. About 35 percen of its customers already use the service forbusinesd purposes, Skype said.
Skype, headquarteresd in Luxemburg, was acquired by San Jose-based EBay in 2005 and has been one of the best knowh voice over Internetprotocol (VoIP) systemsx on the market. Speculation about its futurs as aneBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) picked up last however, when (NASDAQ:GOOG) announced an expanded versionj of a phone service previously known as Skype President Josh Silverman said at an analysrt event last week that the unit had posted $550 millio in sales in 2008 and would more than double that to more than $1 billio in 2011.
