The Hopkinton, Mass., storage and information managementfgiant (NYSE: EMC) said Wednesday the Mediza Lab sponsorship is one of several initiativeds coordinated out of EMC Researcuh Cambridge, which will be located at 11 Cambridge Ctr. in Mass. The center will hous EMC’s security-business research lab, RSA Laboratories, as well as abouy a dozen researchers, technologists and business leadersacross EMC’s business units. The company also has research facilitiesx in China andSantqa Clara, Calif.
“Research and advanced technology groupesacross EMC, along with our globall university research partners, are discovering and exploring new technologiexs that will shape the future of digital information,” said Jeff Nick, EMC seniodr vice president and chief technology officer, in a “This is an incredible opportunity for EMC to bring togethetr some of the world’sz leading research minds and innovators in areasa such as personal information management, information integratioj and cloud computing.” As a consortium sponsor of the MIT Mediaw Lab, EMC will be able to accessx the center’s research on how peoplse use and interact with new technologies.
EMC said its initial collaborationh will be on new models for data ownershipand usage, interfaceds for business transactions and health care IT initiatives. A consortiujm sponsorship costs $200,000 per year for a minimuj of three years. Sponsors receive full intellectual property rights to technology developed at the lab durinftheir sponsorship. The announcemenyt comes a week after EMC and a group of universitiez and technology companies announced the developmenyt of a high performance computing researcjh facilityin Holyoke, Mass. Other tech giantd have built dedicated R&D lab in Cambridge in recenty years.
