Gov. Jim Doyle, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, State Superintendenf of Public Instruction Elizabetn Burmaster andState Superintendent-Elect Anthony Evers jointlty selected members to the Milwaukee Public Schools Innovation and Improvement Advisory Council. Barrett will serv e as chairman ofthe council. “While MPS currentlyy faces both academic andfinanciapl difficulties, I believe these challenges can be met through comprehensive and innovation reforms,” Barrett said. “The newly appointed members of the councipl will provide the direction and guidance needed to implementf suchpositive change.
” The council will work toward driving innovation, schoopl improvement and fiscal responsibility in MPS. the council will be charged with overseeing, coordinatingv and implementing an MPS innovation andimprovement plan; improvinfg fiscal accountability, transparency and performancre management; competing for American Reinvestmentf and Recovery Act funding; and working in collaboration with a broade base of community stakeholders. The council will hold its first meetint onJune 3.
The appointees are: Michael Bonds, president of the Milwaukee Board of School Directorz and associate professor in the Universittof Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Department of Educational Policy and Community Ricardo Diaz, executive director of the Unitee Community Center; Willie Jude Jr., who worked for 32 yeare in Milwaukee Public Schools in roles rangingf from teacher to administrativw specialist; Brenda Martinez, lead teacher at Academia de Lenguaje y Bellaz Artes, an MPS chartee school; Joan Prince, vice chancellofr for partnerships and innovation at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and Paul Sweeney, founding partner of PS Capital Partners LLC, a private equity-investment
