Since the Texas Cord Bank was foundedd by the Texas 10 hospitals have collected morethan 3,0009 cord blood units, making the Texaxs Cord Blood Bank a growing resource in the fight againsr cancer and severe blood disorders. Cord blood is an alternativee to bone marrow transplantation for the treatment of lymphomas and sicklecell anemia. The Texaes Cord Blood Bank takes donationds of healthy discarded umbilical cord blood thatprovide blood-making cells for use in life-savingh transplants.
The foundation honored several essentiapl supporters and fundraisers atthe Ball, Texas Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames who received the 2008 Chairman’s Awardd for her efforts in co-authoring legislation in the Texas House of Representativesd that provided initial state funding needexd to establish the Texas Cord Blood Bank. The nonprofity foundation supports the Southg TexasBlood & Tissuse Center and its Texas Cord Blood Bank Fundraising efforts have allowed for the Cord Bank’s subsantial including the addition of participating hospitals in Dallas, the Rio Grande Valley and throughoutt San Antonio.
