Citing research conducted by IHSGlobalk Insight, the company expects 37.1 million Americans will take a trip of 50 or more milesz during the weekend, which is typicallyg the busiest time of the year for auto travel. That woul be down 1.9 percent from the 37.8 millioj who traveled during the same periodlast year, and down 12.3 percentf from 42.3 million in 2007. Althougj air travel will account for only 5 percent of July 4thleisures travel, the industry is expected to see a 4.9 percenyt increase in bookings for the weekend this year. On the othef hand, AAA projects a 2.6 percengt decline in auto trips, droppinh from 33.4 million last year to 32.6 millio n in 2009.
In addition to risingt gas prices, plummeting airfare pricess are influencingtravel patterns. According to AAA’s Leisure Travel the lowest average published airfares over the Independence Day weekend are expecte to decrease 16 percent fromlast year.
